"Save the Princess" Night! - Livin' the Good Life

09:05 pm - "Save the Princess" Night!
I just finished a wildly fun children's event at my house! It's something I dreamed up a few months ago, and I couldn't wait to put it on. Here's how it went:
Everyone arrived at 7 PM, and, after I fed them a light meal, we played a few circle games. The last one was "The Princess was a Lovely Child" which is an old European "Sleeping Beauty" type of game. This set us up for a puppet show. The infamous little Robbie-the-bear rescues a princess who has lost her way in the woods without a light. He rides his stick horse out in the dark to find her, following her cries for help. He, of course, remembered to bring his headlamp when he heard her calling. When the puppet show is finished, he invites the children watching to borrow his headlamp and play "Save the Princess" themselves outside. We then re-enacted the puppet show scenerio in the dark. I was the horse pulling a wagon with a belt I made that has "reins" (dog leashes) attached. The prince drives me out into the dark to save a princess who is waiting (after calling help!) around the corner of the house. They all took turns being princes and princesses, and they loved, loved, LOVED it! Just as I predicted they would. And I loved being the horse and racing around in the dark! I'd glance back from time to time and see a headlamped-child with a happy grin holding onto the reins for dear life calling "I'm coming!" What fun!! I can't think of anything I'd like to do more than run around in the dark pulling a joyful child in a wagon!
This prince and princess (and baby brother) are off to the castle!
