After two weeks of faithfully doing breath-training exercises, I can say that my daily coughing is cut by about half. This is HUGE. Nothing I have tried so far has helped me this much! (In fact, nothing I have tried so far has helped me AT ALL!)
The exercises seemed easy enough, at first. However, since I really understand what I'm supposed to be doing now, I'm finding them more difficult. What I realize is that I am only supposed to breathe in a TINY amount of air when I'm not active. And then, I "let" the air out, gently, and silently, and as little as possible. No pushing the air out. It's like a bit of air just escapes, very gradually, before I take in another sip of air. It's uncomfortable, because I have a habit of breathing large, noisy gulps of air and then forcing the same amount of air out. And yet, I see that, time after time, I do not need any more air than a "sip". The book says that most of us breathe in 3 to 4 times more air than we need, and we are chronically hyperventilating. But, since it's a long-time habit, it seems perfectly normal.
The real fun begins when I start exercising. The author says you can't make any real progress until you begin exercising vigorously while limiting your breathing. Now that's challenging! I still have a long way to go, but I am so encouraged that I'm commited for the long-haul.
