06:21 pm - A Steady Stream of Summer Fruit

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I didn't realize what I was doing when I planned the fruit trees for this property years ago, but it's turned out pretty great. First, we get buckets-full of delicious, sweet mulberries every April... and they keep on coming all month long. Then, there are apricots in May. We have two trees that bear abundantly, back-to-back, and they are some of the best-tasting apricots I've ever had. Now, at the end of July, we are just finishing harvesting the red grapes, and the purple figs are starting to come on. I rarely buy fruit at the farmer's market because we have fruit ready to pick and eat at home. After the figs are done, I will probably need to buy some summer fruit, but until now, we've had the best of the best growing right outside our door. I feel so lucky for it.

I would love to have fresh homegrown fruit available like that. And how wonderful that it's spaced apart so it's not all ready at the same time. You knew more than you realized back then! We only have a lemon tree which we enjoy in the winter.

Wish we had a lemon tree.... well, actually we do. But lemons can't take our winter cold here. It isn't thriving.
