Both docs that I talked to about my bowel obstruction said there was nothing I could do to prevent it from happening again. In fact, the surgeon said it probably WILL happen again. I just can't accept that! Maybe it will, and maybe it won't. But, I'm not going to sit back and do NOTHING. That's not my style. I can't tolerate feeling like a victim. So, these last couple of weeks I've been researching every day to see how I can help my gut to work properly. Seems there are LOTS of things to try, and I aim to try most of them.
My first attempt to help myself is to take on the GAPS diet. This is no small thing. It's very labor-intensive, time-consuming, and requires planning several days ahead. This diet's main goal is to "heal the gut". The diet is not far from what I was already doing: no grains, no sugar, lots of vegetables, healthy fats (from animals and coconuts), pasture-raised meat and eggs, and ferments like sauerkraut. What I am adding is homemade bone broths with every meal and a good probiotic. What I'm avoiding, for now, is fruit, dairy, and raw foods (I eat everything well-cooked). And of course, NO grains and NO sugar, no fruit, and no potatoes of any kind. Quite restrictive. However, I've been faithfully doing this diet for five days now, and I'm feeling better. No doubt about it.
And, surprisingly, I LIKE the diet. Everything tastes SO good to me! I look forward to every meal. I look forward to the NEXT day's meals. Each day, something different is introduced to see how I tolerate the new food. Today, it's egg yolks. Yesterday, it was sauerkraut. But, every day, from the beginning, I've had bone broths, soups, meats, and steamed vegies smothered in animal fats. I learned to make ghee, which is butter with the lactose taken out through a cooking process. I've never had it before, and I must say, it's absolutely delicious! And the smell is heavenly! Maybe it's just because I've had so little food over the last few weeks, but everything I've tried this week has tasted like the best food EVER! I can't believe how much I am enjoying cauliflower! I steam it in bone broth, salt it, add ghee, and then puree it. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
I've made bone broth from chicken, beef, and fish this week. I've been drinking cups of each broth with gusto and have been cooking all my vegies in it. Butternut squash cooked in salted bone broth, and then pureed, has been my favorite so far. Beets made that way are super-good, too. Oh, and onions. Whole onions cooked in broth are SO sweet and good!
I'm going to continue to report how this diet is going for me. So far, so good. I'm encouraged.

So do you know anything about the ghee I can buy at Trader Joes in the little bottle? Or does it need to be homemade?

I'm hoping someday you might consider putting the recipe for bone broth. I'm interested in learning just how you make it because there are various ways out there.

It's probably fine to buy ghee pre-made. But it's so easy to make it yourself. Supposedly, broth is MUCH better homemade because it doesn't have any additives.
Boil chicken (or any other meat with bones) for up to two hours in a big pot of water. Take chicken out and let cool. De-bone it and put bones back in the water with a splash of apple cider vinegar and salt to taste. (Chicken can then be used for a meal or two.) Simmer bones for as long as you can. 12-36 hours is good. The longer you cook them, the tastier and thicker the broth. You can also add vegies like onion, garlic, celery, carrots, etc, to flavor the broth. They cook into mush and thicken the broth. I usually don't do this because I'm lazy, and I think the broth tastes very good without the vegies. Add more salt at the end if it's not salty enough. Pour into quart-sized containers once it cools, and freeze. The rest you use immediately or store in fridge. Will be good for up to a week, I hear. But mine never lasts that long. So that's the way I do it.

With the GAPS diet, you have a cup of broth with every meal. It is one of the most important parts of this diet because of its gut-healing properties.
