Let me explain. Today Ollie came over wanting to play "Family". So I immediately start thinking: "you're the mommy, I'm the daddy and this is the baby". I agreed, and he starts gathering the "family" together from the toy shelf. First he brings me "the baby", and it is indeed a small baby doll. OK, so far so good. Then he brings me "the mama", which is a bigger baby doll dressed in infant clothes.... ok. Then a teddy bear who is "the helper", whatever that is. Then, a stuffed flying horse who is "the sister"... ok, ok. Ollie said I was "the babysitter" and he was another "helper". Then he goes to the toy shelf and brings over a hefty-sized rock that had made its way inside from the yard. He said matter-of-factly that this was "the papa"...... well, of course. And it reminded me that children do NOT need toys. Because for them anything can be anything. If they have toys that are shaped like a specific thing, like a realistic-looking hot dog, that is what it has to be. But, if they use a stick, it can be anything. And it can even morph into something else, as needed, during the course of the play. And sticks and rocks are absolutely free. No toy stores necessary. I love that.

And so explains my childhood! We used rocks and sticks for all sorts of things. Brooms were often our cars or horses. We were in imaginary land for hours at a time….often all afternoon. It was a great way to grow up.
