Here is the letter I am submitting to our local paper tomorrow:

"I just returned from the meeting at the Joshua Tree Community Center regarding the proposed building of the “Joshua Tree Villas”. The developer, Steven Katz from Philadelphia, seemed like a nice man, but he was not well-received. He was there to sell us a "bill-of-goods" wrapped up in what he thought was an attractive package. However, we weren’t buying, and we told him so. I was moved by the tremendous passion and force of the near-capacity crowd that showed up in protest. I was proud of the eloquent speeches, the powerful points, the alternative suggestions, the well-researched facts, and the heartfelt concerns that were presented in a meeting that lasted nearly three hours. No one wanted to leave or even take a break. We were all there to let this man know, in no uncertain terms, that we do not want 2800 homes being built on Section 33 and gave him all the reasons why. You can read some of these reasons in the paper, or better yet, watch the meeting itself on local television. Believe me, it is worth seeing and hearing. What a pleasure to get to witness such courageous, well-spoken, well-informed people in one place for one common cause. I think we made it crystal clear that developers may be able to get away with clear cutting and a host of other environmental travesties in Yucca Valley, but they can’t do it here in Joshua Tree. I am proud to call myself a member of this great little community."
