10:54 am - Charming Ben

Two nights ago, my childbirth class was just filing out of our living room at 9:30, and who should come walking in, but our youngest son, Ben, and his girlfriend, Rebecca. I don't see him much because half the week he lives at the ambulance department, and the other half, he is working hard to catch up with household duties, music projects, and SLEEP! He is a very busy guy. Anyway, he talked my ear off for two hours. It was an exceptionally enjoyable two hours for me! The thing that struck me the most was that he has definitely become a MAN. It is such a pleasure to see that his teen years are clearly behind him, and he has joined the adult world. Not that he was ever rebellious. He was one of those kids who was innately responsible and didn't do silly things. He had his future firmly in his mind, and he worked steadily toward his goals. But, he did go through a period after 18 when he didn't want to talk to Steve or me much, and he certainly didn't want to hear our advice. So, we didn't see him that often. I get the feeling that, at 22, he has let go of his resistance to us as authority figures. In fact, he really feels like a peer now, which is a big relief to us all. Ben always had a rough edge to him, socially. It was frustrating to me, because I knew he could be smooth if he wanted to be. These days, I see more and more smoothness, social savvy, and a big, easy confidence that is undeniably attractive. He just feels good to be around. He must be learning the lesson that "you attract more flies with honey", or something like that. (Is that the way it goes?) Anyway, this is a roundabout way of saying, I find Ben charming.

This is very encouraging. Daniel is 18 and going through a "closed" period, after being such a warm, open, affectionate kid all those years. I really miss him! So it is nice to hear this story. And how wonderful for you!!!
