08:56 pm - Oregon State Yoga Champion
Yep! That's our boy! Gabe came in first in the men's division of the Oregon State Yoga Championships in Portland last weekend. If that sounds a little strange, it's understandable. Most Westerners think of yoga as a mild form of exercise that stretches and relaxes the body... a class you might take at the local Parks and Recreation Department in your town. But, in India yoga is much more than that. It is a philosophy of life, a lifestyle that requires minute-by-minute strict discipline of body and mind. And it is also considered a sport.... one in which the yoga "athletes" compete for excellence. India has regular yoga competitions to see who is the strongest, most flexible, agile and balanced.
Gabe took the Bikram Yoga Teacher Training a year ago, and he currently teaches Bikram Yoga in Eugene. In addition, he decided to begin training for yoga competition last summer and has worked very hard to prepare himself. Many yogis in this country hope to add yoga as an Olympic event someday. In the meantime, they host statewide competitions to bring public awareness to the "sport" of yoga.
Gabe will now be representing Oregon in the national competitions in L.A. this February. We will be there!
