07:11 pm - Ben and Santa
I just read my friend Jill's blog, and she showed funny pictures of her children on Santa's lap over the years. It made me think of a cute story about our Ben and Santa. When Ben was about four, Steve was the Santa photographer for our town. Ben always accompanied his dad to the photography shoots as his "helper". (Ben loved being his dad's helper!) It turned out that Ben was useful in passing out candy canes to the children after they had their pictures taken. He took this job very seriously and wouldn't have missed it for the world. The next year when December rolled around, Ben was raring to go as Santa's helper again. But, the very first day he came home saying matter-of-factly, "Mom, I know who Santa Claus is." Until then, he didn't know that Santa wasn't real, so I said, "Oh really? Who?" "It's Joe." When I asked him why he thought that, he said, "I saw Joe walk into the bathroom, and then I saw him walk out in a Santa suit." Joe was a friend of ours. And the funny thing was, Ben never mentioned it again. He seemed to want to continue pretending that Santa was this mysterious person from the North Pole and all that. I thought that was so precious. Children love make-believe and magic, and it was clear that he wasn't ready to give that story up just yet. Gotta love him for that.
