Last week I got myself something for Advent that may be my favorite gift ever. I bought a CD of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir performing the Messiah (John Alldis- conductor) AND a book of the complete vocal score. It's the same book I've used many times over the years when I performed in the choruses as an alto. This particular rendition of the Messiah has got to be my all-time favorite. It moves me to tears. Some versions are too slow and draggy for my taste. This one is bright and vibrant and SO heartfelt! The performances are sparkling and masterful. And anyone familiar with the Messiah knows how challenging the music is. It's a real vocal workout! One of the reasons I got this book and CD was to practise my sight-reading, which is poor. I'm a quick memorizer, so I've never had to learn to read music. Once I hear it a few times, I've got it. This time I'm going to patiently work on my reading without the pressure of singing with others who can read well. But, the main reason I got the CD was just to enjoy what I consider to be the ultimate Christmas music with the hairs rising on the back of my neck. Ahh... the pleasure!!
