Notes on my Dad - Livin' the Good Life

09:06 pm - Notes on my Dad
My dad has been especially perky lately. He's mentally lively, making lots of jokes and laughing, and he's walking faster and faster. But, as I've mentioned before, it's his hair that is surprising me the most. When he came here last November his hair was snow white. Completely white. Now, he is sporting darker hair in spots. (Mostly grey, but on close inspection some of it is black) It rises up from his temples, and is also found here and there around his hairline. I can say with assurance, as one who washes and dries my dad's hair, that this happened relatively quickly. His hair just started changing color. It didn't seem to "grow out" darker, but "turned", like a leaf changing color, and is continuing to "turn". (I've read that that is impossible.)
I'll be interested to see what his hair looks like after six months of visiting other family members and eating a different, less strict diet. Will he continue to get darker or will it revert to white? We'll see!
Here he is now:
Here's a funny story from Ely's wedding. I had asked Maggie if she would keep an eye on my dad at the wedding because I knew I would be distracted. At the reception I ran into her walking around arm in arm with him. I said, "Looks like you're taking good care of Dad!", and she said with a smile in her sweet, feminine way, "No, I think he's taking care of ME!" And off they went. Later I talked to her, and she said that as soon as she said that to me, my dad took a firmer grip of her arm and started guiding her around. He took her over to the refreshments and the drinks and seemed to be taking his "job" of taking care of her very seriously. What a sweetie!
Which made me remember how my dad would watch our kids from time to time while I went to the store. As I was leaving, he invariably said, "I'll guard the kids!" I'd smile when he said that because I knew there'd be a whole lot more than "guarding" going on while I was gone. He was a lot of fun!
