09:11 pm - Appreciating Huell Howser
There are other treatments in my hospital that are every bit as important as the physical ones. These have to do with fixing my "mind set". So, every day, without fail, I read some kind of uplifting material. There are stacks of wonderful, informative, helpful books by my bedside. Another thing I do is watch Huell Howser's "California's Gold" on PBS whenever I can. (He's on just about every night, so I have plenty of opportunities.) What I appreciate about his show is that he puts such a positive spin on the world... in this case, on California. This man's TV personna is an irrepressibly enthusiastic appreciator of everything around him. He goes around and visits all the big and little places of interest in our state, asking all kinds of probing questions of the people who give him the tours, and shows genuine enthusiasm for everything. I was telling Steve the other night that this man does more good than almost anyone I know. His whole job is to expose and celebrate our wonderful world. There are very few TV shows that can boast that much goodness. Most news shows are about what bad things are happening. Those programs give the impression that our world is full of ugliness, danger, bad people, and disaster everywhere we look... except Huell Howser. He sees goodness, beauty, pure intentions, good-heartedness, fun, and virtue everywhere he looks, and he shares that view with us. I prefer to look at the world through his eyes. Thanks, Huell.
