02:04 pm - The Reason I Did It
The reason I told the following story is that it is so hard for children to imagine adults as children. Since it was my birthday, I wanted the children to get a sense of me as a child and then me growing up to be who I am today. Very old to them, I imagine! Sixty-two must seem ancient! (So I threw in the bit about my dad for some perspective.) I wanted them to know that I was once like them. And I wanted the birthday party to have meaning.
When Gabe was about their age, he asked me, "Mama, are you growing faster than me?" When I said no, he asked, "Then why are you bigger than me?" In his mind, I started when he started, because he couldn't imagine a time before he existed. Interesting logic. So, this is one of the reasons I wanted to share this story with the children yesterday. Plus, I thought their mamas would enjoy seeing me as a kid, too... a way of getting to know me better.
