02:27 pm - Feeling Sad Today
We lost a favorite relative today. My cousin Laurie's husband, Ev, died this morning after a year-long battle with cancer. He was my age. They lived on a little farm in northern California, raising two responsible, hard-working daughters... just like them. A model family, full of love and a distinctively fun-loving spirit. Did I say "spirited"? Oh, they were that!! Daring, adventuresome, playful, athletic, outdoors-people... all. And Ev led the pack. He was authoritative. He was strong. He was always out there DOING things. Hard things, like chopping all their family's firewood for the winter (their only heat), attending to the livestock, fussing over the apple orchard from blossom to fruit, then hosting a cider-making party in the fall for all their friends. He made the most enormous bonfire with tree-trimmings every year, and we were fortunate enough to witness it once. Truly awesome. If you needed a favor, you called Ev. He was ever-ready and willing. He was a teacher, specializing in working with troubled kids. I hear he was tough, but kind. He used humor in the classroom, as well as at home, as his MO. He was a community leader. I hear he was the "go-to-man" whenever charitable organizations needed an auctioneer. An ENTERTAINING and FUNNY auctioneer, to boot!
Whenever we left their family farm after a visit, Steve would remark on what a "manly man" Ev was and how much he admired him. It was plain to me how sincerely Steve meant that.
We are sad that Laurie has lost the love of her life, and that Ev's girls have lost their "papa". His only grandchild, just a baby, will not remember him. So, so sad. So many tears today... (((sigh)))
