Family Healing - Livin' the Good Life

12:02 pm - Family Healing
Yesterday, the last day of 2011, our family gathered around our kitchen table and had a memorial service. We were collectively remembering our losses from last year, two important family members. Nathen led the service. He explained it to me as an opportunity for all of us to reopen painful wounds, with the hope that they will heal better this time. To let each other know of our sadness, regrets, anger, unexpressed love, gratefulness, and appreciation was powerful and profound.
I came away from our table with many things, but mainly the conviction that when we have a child, God has literally GIVEN us an important person, and that it is vital to view this as a SACRED TRUST. “Do no harm” should be every parent’s aim. In my opinion, there is no higher calling than that of shepherding in the next generation, using the best that is in us. All the other distractions in life put together do not even come close to the importance of this sacred calling.
I earnestly pray that our family will pass on a legacy of love and appreciation and true helpfulness to each successive generation and that this family will be a force for good in this world. May our children stand on our shoulders and reach for even better.
