Caine's Arcade - Livin' the Good Life

I saw this on a friend's blog and just HAD to repost it. IT MADE MY DAY. This story says so much about the true nature of children. They don't need to be innundated with toys and constantly entertained and occupied with TV and video games. They are, left to their own devices, full of ideas and creativity just waiting to get out! Continuously giving them the latest plaything or media device can suppress their natural creative urges. Back in the days when we had no money, our children had surprisingly little compared to other kids they knew, and they also had very limited media exposure. We left them to entertain themselves much of the time. (I called it "benign neglect"!) And I was sometimes astounded by the imaginative activities they came up with. I think the goal of unschooling is to nurture this tendency in children, and some kids are better at accessing and acting on it than others. Some seem to need more hand-holding and assistance, but others.... watch out! All they need is some tape and some cardboard, like this kid, and they are off and running! Enjoy.
