Last night, Steve and I were out until dark assembling a GARDEN TRUG for the backyard. It was fairly simple to put together. Here it is almost completed:

This will be replacing my enclosed garden frame from last year (which I gave to Nathen and Reanna). I found I didn't need the protection of the chicken wire, as the cats were able to keep rodants out of the backyard area quite effectively. What I did need, though, was a raised-bed so that the persistant crabgrass underneath would not grow up and invade the vegetables above. The TRUG was my solution. I will cover it with bird-netting, initially, until the baby greens get a good start. (Birds love tender new shoots of lettuce!) Then I think I will be able to remove the nets. We'll see. It's an experiment. I was thrilled with my continuing harvests from last year, and I'm looking forward to another winter of delicious fresh greens from my backyard.

I would have thought the bottom of this would be flat, not pointed. This shows what I know about gardening....next to nothing.
I can almost smell that fresh wood!

This is actually an ingenius design that is much stronger than a flat bottom. You plant deep-rooted vegies in the middle and shallow-rooted along the sides.
