I didn't know the guy, but when Huell Howser died last week, I felt a great sadness. I watched probably 100 episodes of his show, California's Gold, over the years, and I really enjoyed his folksy, off-beat style. My dad loved him, too. The younger people in our family took every opportunity to make fun of him if they walked in during one of his shows. But, I thought he was brilliant. He found a niche for himself in the television world that was completely unique. There is no one like Huell Howser. I read lots of testimonies by people who had met him and had interactions with him, and they ALL said basically the same thing: He was genuine, and generous, and courteous at all times. How many people can you say that about? How many people make it their business of pointing a positive spotlight on everything around them? How many people ferret out others who are lesser known, but doing something good, and put them on television for all to see and enjoy?
Huell, I salute you, appreciate you, and thank you for all the good you've done in your lifetime. The world is a better place because of you.
