Gems From Ollie - Livin' the Good Life

03:59 pm - Gems From Ollie
Today Ollie was pretending to talk on a play phone, and we asked him who he was talking to. He said, "I'm talking to Buddy." Buddy is our neighbor's dog. I said, "Oh really? What is he saying?" And Ollie said, after thinking a bit, "Actually, he's barking." The gales of laughter that followed from us were hilarious. We couldn't believe he said that! For a toddler who is just learning to talk, that was a very sophisticated thing to say.
Later, he was sitting on my lap and we were reading his favorite book, WE'RE GOIN' ON A BEAR HUNT. He knows the book by heart and chimes in at key moments. When we got to the end, where the family finds the bear in the cave and starts running away from him, Ollie got so excited, he scrambled off the couch and began running around and around the room as if he was fleeing the bear. I could hear him saying stuff under his breath like, "running back through the forest!" and "running back through the mud!" "get to the house!.. open the door!.. run upstairs!.. jump in the bed!... under the covers!" He was sweaty and breathing fast by the time he'd said, "under the covers!" and he ran over to me and leaned on my lap to see the last part where the bear walks back home. (Ollie and I think he looks sad.) I loved how he dealt with his excitement and fear by running around and acting it out. It seemed like such a pure and healthy thing to do.
