Guess where we're going?
The whole gang is going ice skating for my birthday! That included Gabe, Nathen, Reanna, Maya, Damian, Ollie, and many of our friends and their kids. It was a real skating party, and I was so glad we did it. So fun!
Guess what we're watching?
Ollie and I are watching our friends and family learning to skate. I loved seeing everyone acquire their "skating legs" over the course of two hours. Many of them had never skated before. (Even Ollie skated with lots of steady hands offering to hold him up as he scrabbled along on his tiny blades. Next year, Ollie, next year I bet you'll be skating a little on your own.)
Guess who got on the ice today?
I did... on my wobbly 65 year old legs that haven't ice skated in 25 years! I did pretty well and didn't fall once. That was a major goal for me. No falling! Notice the "elf hat" that Maya knitted for me for my birthday. Thanks, Maya! I love it! It really got me in the spirit for doing something whimsical like ice skating.
I wanted to do something completely different, something active, for my birthday this year. I was so pleased to see that everyone turned out for my party, and I loved, loved, LOVED witnessing the children learn to skate. That was the best part. They so earnestly practiced and practiced until they all pretty much could get around the rink with very little falling. Each child had their own unique style of learning, and of skating, and each had to overcome some fear or difficulty over the course of the afternoon. So fascinating. I was really proud of how everybody persevered and made big strides. We have the GREATEST group of kids.... and parents!
We came home to Maya's homemade chocolate truffle birthday cake. Thanks again, Maya! You make the best cakes ever!
