Here is a letter I submitted to the editor of our local newspaper today. I was thrilled that they had printed such good news:
The story published in the 1-2-08 Hi-Desert Star regarding being a good steward to our land was the best I’ve read in a long, long time. Thanks, Hi-Desert Star, for bringing our attention to this issue. And thank you Rhonda Hayes for asking the people of the Morongo Basin for a commitment to preserve and protect their own personal properties from damage and destruction. She wants to educate people about how to care for their land in a responsible way so that we all may enjoy this wonderful desert for a long time to come. I love how she became a real estate agent just so she could sell property that came up for sale in her neighborhood to other people who shared her love for the desert. Brilliant! I like her concept of educating people to make better choices. The fact is that most people scrape their properties clean of all vegetation because they don’t know any better. I would go a step further and invite people into my neighborhood who want to build or renovate their houses to be highly efficient, allowing for large south-facing windows, using straw-bale or other excellent insulating materials for their walls, and using solar panels to create their electricity (the sun being our most abundant resource here in the desert). If people are made aware of the alternatives, and how great they are, many of them would choose differently. In fact, the alternatives are downright exciting, and it’s just a matter of time before they will become “the thing to do”. I believe it’s time to join the growing body of people on the cutting edge and reap the incredible benefits of “going green”. Thanks, Rhonda, for your efforts in making that ideal more of a reality for us all.
