Here's the letter I sent to the editor of our local newspaper yesterday. I can pretty much guarantee that it will appear in next Wednesday's paper. Why? Because they always print my letters!
"Would a local proponent of the new Wal-Mart Supercenter please give a very clear and convincing answer as to why this community needs another Wal-Mart?
Here is my concern: We already have a perfectly good Wal-Mart. Why do we need to flatten another piece of commercial property to put in what is nothing more than a glorified rendition of something we already have? We already have four perfectly good supermarkets in Yucca Valley. We already have numerous gas stations. I could understand wanting to add a Trader Joe's, for example, because that store carries so many items that cannot be found already in the high desert. I think that a comprehensive bookstore, like Border’s, would be a unique and welcome addition to the high desert. We don't have a large, fully-stocked book or music store. It would provide something that is actually needed here. I’m not "anti-growth". I am for slow and careful growth. I am for smart and sustainable growth. I vote that we keep the Wal-Mart we already have, and that we add new businesses with products and services that the community is actually lacking and needing. Can we be really smart about this?"
